About this session
A beatboxer teaches the room the three sounds every beat is built on, the kick, the hi-hat and the snare, and has everyone making a basic beat with their mouth inside twenty minutes. From there the group layers sounds into a team groove, half the room holding the beat while the other half adds a bass line or a hook, and the hour ends with the whole team performing one piece together. Nobody needs musical background; the people who arrive certain they cannot do it usually end up loudest. It suits eight to forty people.
In person it needs a room where people can stand in a circle and make noise without disturbing the floor, and a microphone and speaker for groups over twenty, which the beatboxer brings. Online it works with cameras on: the beatboxer demonstrates close to the microphone, everyone practices muted, then unmutes in turn or in small breakout rooms to put the sounds together. Nobody performs solo unless they want to. It is a team session, not a music lesson; anyone with a voice or breathing condition does as much as feels comfortable.
What your people take away
- Make a kick, a hi-hat and a snare with your mouth and put them into a four-count beat
- Hold a steady beat while the rest of the room adds a bass line and a hook on top
- Perform a team groove with your whole team, built from nothing in an hour
- Add a bass tone, an inward snare or a click to your beat once the basics are steady
- Lead a ninety-second beat at the start of a meeting with no equipment at all
