About this session

Groups of three or four each make a short podcast episode, four minutes long: they pick a story from their working lives, decide who hosts and who is the guest, write an opening and six questions, record it on a phone in a quiet corner, and the team listens to every episode at the end. A podcast producer leads it, coaching each group on getting a real story out of a guest and opening so a listener stays. It suits nine to thirty people. The team leaves with episodes it made, and most teams keep making them.

In person it needs a briefing room and three or four quiet corners for recording, with people’s own phones; Workbliss brings clip-on microphones, headphones and a speaker for the listening session, and the client provides the rooms. Online, groups plan in breakout rooms, record on the call with everyone else muted or on their phones, and the producer collects the files for the listening session. In the half day groups also edit on a free phone or laptop app. It is a creative workshop, not an audio production course, and nothing is published unless the team decides to.

What your people take away

  • Make a four-minute podcast episode with your group in ninety minutes, from idea to listening
  • Interview a colleague so that a real story comes out, with six questions and one good follow-up
  • Open an episode with a line that makes a listener stay for the next thirty seconds
  • Record clean audio on a phone in an ordinary office, and know what ruins it
  • Cut an episode down on a free app so the best four minutes are the four minutes people hear

  • Host, guest and producerWho asks, who answers, who keeps time and presses record, and the shape of a four-minute episode on one card

Writing and recording

Every length
  • Six questions and an opening lineThe host writes six questions that need a story in answer, the guest picks the detail it starts on, and the group writes the first line last
  • Recording in a cornerPhone on a table, microphone a hand’s width from the mouth, a quiet corner, a ten-second test, and one take with the clock running
  • The pickupListening back to the take on headphones, re-recording the one answer that did not land, and recording the close on its own

Editing and listening

Every length
  • Cutting it downIn the half day, on a free app: trimming the start, cutting the stumbles, placing the pickup, and a music bed under the opening
