About this session

Parents of a disabled child run a second job: appointments, therapies, school meetings, equipment, funding applications and the fights to get what the child is entitled to, all around a working week. This session helps them build the systems and support that make both jobs possible, protect their own health, and get what they need from work without having to explain everything.

The expert has worked with families of disabled children and adapts the practical content to where the client’s people are: in the US, special education plans, Medicaid waivers and family leave; in the UK, education, health and care plans, Disability Living Allowance and carer’s leave; and the equivalents elsewhere. It is education, not advice on an individual child, and the expert points to parent organizations and the client’s benefits.

What your people take away

  • Organize the appointments, paperwork and advocacy so they take less of you
  • Know the leave, flexibility and benefits available to you where you work
  • Build a care and backup network you can rely on
  • Protect your own health and your relationship through long-term caring
  • Decide what to tell work, and get the flexibility you need
