About this session

In fifteen minutes a musician turns whatever is on people’s desks into an orchestra: a mug and a spoon, a stapler, a keyboard, a water bottle, a notebook on a knee. Everyone finds one sound, the room sorts itself into sections by sound, the musician sets a pulse and layers the sections, and the team plays a one-minute piece with a start, a swell and a stop, recorded on a phone. It suits six to sixty people as the opener for a meeting, an offsite or a training day, and it wakes a room up faster than coffee.

In person it needs nothing but the objects within reach; the musician brings a small drum for the pulse and a phone to record. Online it runs with cameras on: everyone plays along muted to the musician’s pulse, then the musician unmutes one section at a time and layers them, and the last minute is played with everyone unmuted and the delay treated as part of the sound. Nobody needs to play anything; a sound and a willingness to hit a mug count. It is a warm-up, not a music lesson or a drumming workshop.

What your people take away

  • Find a sound on your desk and play it on the beat in under a minute
  • Play your part in a section while three other sections play something else
  • Follow a conductor’s hand for loud, soft, a swell and a dead stop
  • Record a one-minute piece the team played on mugs, keyboards and staplers
  • Open your next meeting with a two-minute orchestra, no musician needed
