About this session

Each person builds a terrarium in a glass jar and takes it home or to their desk: a drainage layer of gravel, a layer of charcoal, a mesh, potting mix, two or three small plants, moss and a stone, with a gardener showing each layer. The gardener explains how a closed jar waters itself and how to tell when it needs help, and everyone leaves with a care card. In ninety minutes each person builds one closed terrarium; the half day builds a closed and an open one and adds a plant clinic. It suits six to thirty people.

In person it needs tables with cover and a sink or a jug of water; Workbliss brings the jars, the layers, the plants, the tools and gloves, and the client provides the room. Online, each person receives a kit ahead with the jar, the layers in bags, the plants wrapped and a care card, and builds along with the gardener on camera. Plants are chosen for the season and the climate where people are, and for what travels well. It is a build and a plant-care lesson, not a horticulture course; gloves are worn for the soil and charcoal.

What your people take away

  • Build a closed terrarium in layers: gravel, charcoal, mesh, soil, plants and moss
  • Choose plants that will live in a sealed jar on a desk, and the ones that will not
  • Water a terrarium once and know from the glass when it next needs it
  • Spot mold, rot and leggy growth early and fix each one in a minute
  • Keep a terrarium alive on your desk for a year with a care card and five minutes a month

  • How a closed jar waters itselfThe water cycle inside a sealed jar, shown on a six-month-old terrarium, and why the layers are in that order
  • Choosing your jar and plantsA jar with a lid or a cork, two or three plants that like damp shade, and what each will do in the jar
  • Gravel, charcoal and meshThe drainage layer, a thin layer of charcoal to keep it sweet, and a mesh so the soil does not sink into the gravel

Planting the jar

Every length
  • Soil and a landscapePotting mix added with a slope, a stone placed, and the plan for where each plant sits before anything goes in
  • Planting with a spoonEach plant teased from its pot, roots trimmed if needed, planted with a spoon or a stick, and firmed in
  • The first watering and the lidA measured first watering down the glass, the lid on, and where to put the jar: bright, never in direct sun

Keeping the jar alive

Every length
  • Reading the glassFog in the morning that clears by noon is right; constant fog, dry glass and drips each mean one thing, with the fix
  • Mold, rot and trimmingThe white fuzz, the yellow leaf and the stem that reaches: what each means, and the pick, the trim and the airing that fix them
