About this session

A working voice actor leads the room through what happens in a recording booth: a warm-up, the three dials of pitch, pace and placement, one line read ten ways, a character built from a card, and a two-minute scene recorded in groups of four with a narrator, characters and sound effects. Nobody needs acting experience, and nobody is made to do a voice they do not want to. It suits eight to twenty people. The team leaves with a recording it made, a few characters it can call up, and a voice that is steadier on the next call.

In person it needs a quiet room and a corner for recording; Workbliss brings a microphone and a laptop, and the client provides the room. Online, everyone wears headphones, scripts are shared the day before, pairs and groups rehearse in breakout rooms, and scenes are recorded on the call. The voice actor steers clear of accents that mock real people, and anyone can read a part straight. It is a creative workshop, not a voice-acting course or voice therapy; anyone with a voice or throat condition does what feels comfortable and checks with their doctor if speaking hurts.

What your people take away

  • Warm up your voice in four minutes the way a voice actor does before a recording session
  • Move pitch, pace and placement to turn your own voice into three characters you can hold
  • Read one line ten ways so a room can tell what you mean without a word changing
  • Record a two-minute scene with your group, with a narrator, characters and sound effects
  • Use what a character does for your voice to steady it on a call or in front of a room

What’s covered

Warming up and the three dials

Every length
  • The booth warm-upLip trills, a siren, a hum into the front of the face, tongue twisters and a yawn: four minutes that get a voice ready to work
  • Pitch, pace and placementThree dials on the voice: higher or lower, faster or slower, in the nose, the chest or the throat, and one line read with each one moved
  • One line, ten waysA neutral line read as a villain, a tired parent, a newsreader, a robot, a best friend, and the room guessing the intention

Building a character

Every length
  • A character from a cardAge, job, mood and a secret on a card, a voice built from the three dials, and the actor coaching one person at a time
  • Holding the voiceA paragraph read in character, the breath that keeps it there, where it slips and how to bring it back without stopping
  • A scene for twoA short two-hander script, both parts in character, roles swapped, and a take recorded on a phone to hear back

The recording

Every length
  • Casting the sceneGroups of four cast a two-minute scene: a narrator, two or three characters, someone on sound effects, and a setting drawn from a hat
  • Takes at the microphoneMic distance, the page held off to the side, the actor directing, a first take, a note each and a second take
  • Playback and the voice at workThe scenes played back to the room, one note each, the recording sent, and what the character work does for a nervous voice on a call
