About this session

People bring in the appliances and chargers they argue about, plug them into energy monitors, and find out what each one really costs to run, then build an audit of their own home room by room. An energy advisor leads it for groups of 8 to 25. The team leaves with real numbers for the kettle, the second fridge, the game console on standby and the heater under the desk, a checklist for their own home, and a short list of changes that save the most for the least effort.

It runs in person, in a room with tables and plenty of power sockets. Workbliss brings plug-in energy monitors, an infrared thermometer for finding drafts, and sample bills from several countries; the client provides the room and a few appliances from the office kitchen, and people bring one or two small items from home. The advisor adapts the examples to how your people heat and cool their homes and to local tariffs. It is education, not an installer’s survey or an energy certificate, and anyone planning insulation, solar or a heat pump should get local advice for their own home.

What your people take away

  • Read your own electricity and heating bill and know what a kilowatt-hour costs you
  • Measure what a kettle, a charger, a game console and a space heater really use, including on standby
  • Find the drafts and cold spots in a room with an infrared thermometer
  • Rank the changes at home by what they save and what they cost, and pick your top three
  • Take home a room-by-room audit checklist and a plan for a week of measuring with a plug-in monitor
