About this session
People bring two or three garments they no longer wear and remake them into something they will: a shirt cropped and fitted, jeans turned into shorts with a patch pocket, a dress with a new hem and a dart, a sweater with a visible mend, a tote from a worn shirt. A clothing designer who remakes garments leads it for groups of 8 to 20, with sewing machines and hand-sewing kits. Nobody needs to have sewn. The team gets an afternoon of cutting and stitching, a wearable piece each, and a new way of seeing the wardrobe at home.
It runs in person, in a room with large tables, light and power for the machines. Workbliss brings the designer, sewing machines, hand-sewing kits, scissors, seam rippers, pins, thread, patches, buttons, bias tape and a rail of spare garments; the client provides the room and a mirror and asks people ahead to bring the clothes. The designer covers scissors, pins and machine safety, and only people who have been shown use the machines. It is a making session, not a sewing or design course, and anything with real value or sentiment is remade only if its owner is sure.
What your people take away
- Take a garment apart at the seams and see how it was made
- Thread a sewing machine, sew a straight seam and a hem, and finish an edge that will not fray
- Crop, take in, patch or shorten a piece you had stopped wearing so you wear it again
- Mend a hole with a visible stitch that becomes part of the garment
- Sort your own wardrobe into keep, mend, remake and pass on, and set a date for a swap at work

What’s covered
The wardrobe on the table
Every length- Why clothes get thrown awayFit, fashion, a stain, a hole, boredom: what sends a garment to landfill, and how little of it is beyond repair
- Reading a garmentFabric, grain, seams and construction: how to look at a piece of clothing and see what it can become
- Choosing the remakeOne piece, one change: a crop, a shortening, a taking-in, a patch, a tote, a collar off, decided with the designer
Cutting and stitching
Every length- Unpicking and cuttingSeams opened with a ripper, pieces cut on the chalk line with the grain, and nothing cut twice
- The machine and the handThreading a machine, a straight seam, a zigzag to stop fraying, and the backstitch and slip stitch for what the machine cannot reach
- Fitting as you goPinned, tried on, adjusted and sewn: the fitting that makes a remake wearable instead of nearly
Finishing and the wardrobe plan
Every length- Hems, edges and the visible mendHems finished, raw edges bound, a hole darned or patched with a stitch that shows, and the piece pressed
- Showing what you madeEach piece held up or worn, with the before photo next to it, and what the maker would do differently
- Keep, mend, remake, pass onA method for your own wardrobe, the care and washing that makes clothes last, a mending kit for home, and a clothes swap at work
