About this session

People turn what an office throws away, plastic bottles, cans, wooden crates, pallets, mugs, broken furniture, into planters and small garden features, and plant them up on the day. A maker and gardener leads it for groups of 8 to 25, at covered tables. Everyone makes a planter from something that was waste and takes it away planted; in the longer session the group also builds a feature for the office: a wall of bottle planters, a crate herb garden or an insect hotel. The team gets an hour or more of making, a planter each, and something that stays.

It runs in person, indoors with covered tables and a sink or outdoors with a weather plan. Workbliss brings drills, cutters, files, sandpaper, gloves, safety glasses, potting mix, plants and extra clean waste; the client saves two weeks of office bottles, cans and packaging and provides the space and a spot to fix a feature. The maker covers tool safety and what not to reuse: anything that held chemicals, treated or stained wood, and cans with sharp edges until filed. It is a making session, not a woodwork course, and nobody uses a power tool without the maker beside them.

What your people take away

  • Turn a bottle, a can or a crate into a planter with drainage that will not rot or leak
  • Use a drill, a cutter and a file safely on plastic, metal and wood
  • Know which waste is safe to reuse for growing and which never is
  • Plant up what you made with the right potting mix and a plant that suits it
  • Build a bottle-planter wall or an insect hotel for the office with the team
